Imperial Rome with a visit to the Thermae of Emperor Caracalla (walking tour only)

You will be able to visit:

  • The Thermae of Emperor Caracalla – officially called the Thermae Antoniniana. They were located near the Appian Way. Construction began in 212 AD and was completed in 217 AD after the emperor’s death (entrance ticket required)
  • The Great Circus is the most extensive hippodrome in ancient Rome, where gladiatorial fights and major spectacles took place.
  • The Imperial Palaces, the centrepiece of Rome’s seven main hills, 40 m high.
  • The Aventine Hill, one of the seven hills on which Rome is situated, was located on the left bank of the Tiber River southwest of the Palatine.
  • The “Rose Garden” also known as Il Roseto, is a public garden located opposite the Grand Circus on the Aventine Hill. The park was founded in 1931. More than 1,100 varieties of roses are grown here, many of which are imported from around the world.
  • St Sabina Basilica or Santa Sabina al Aventino Church is a historic church and the Church of St Sabina and St Alexis located at the top of the Aventine Hill.
  • The famous “Keyhole of Rome” is one of the unusual sights, from where the three states of the Order of Malta, the Vatican and Italy itself can be seen.
  • The orange grove with a magnificent view of the city, the descent to the Tiber on a medieval, basalt-paved road.
  • The Forum Boario, the oldest forum, was located on the left bank of the Tiber in a hollow surrounded by the Capitoline, Palatine and Aventine hills.
  • The Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin with the famous mask of the “Mouth of Truth”.
  • 2 temples of the Republic period – temples were the main type of public buildings during the Republic period, especially in the 5th and 2nd centuries BC.
  • The Isle of Tiberina is a small boat-shaped island (270 metres long and 67 metres wide) located in the southern bend of the Tiber River in Rome, south of the Vatican and Rome’s oldest bridges
  • The former Jewish ghetto quarter
  • Theatre Marcello is an ancient theatre built in 13-11 BC on the Mars site. BC on the Champ de Mars.
  • Capitoline Hill is one of the seven hills on which ancient Rome originated.
  • The Pantheon is a pagan ancient temple in Rome dedicated to the ancient Roman gods, the epitome of the power of the Roman Empire.
