Capella Portinari (chapel of the representative of the Medici Bank)
Milan’s Capella Portinari is part of the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio.
This gem of Renaissance architecture displays one of the most characteristic features of the style: ornamentation.
It is decorated with frescoes, painted reliefs and ornaments.
The overall composition of the chapel is reminiscent of similar centric buildings in Florence, such as the Pazzi Chapel.
The Sistine Chapel, all covered with frescoes by the famous Lombard painter Foppa.
It also houses a relic, the skull of St Peter Martyr.
In 1464, Cosimo de Medici dies.
In all the cities where the Medici bank had branches, Rome, Venice, Milan and others, masses were celebrated.
Branch managers were involved in charity work.
The chapel was designed by Pigello Portinari, the manager of the Medici branch in Milan.
The main attraction is the frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa (1466-1468)
