ROMAN BAROQUE MYSTERIES

Mysteries of the Roman Baroque: in 17th century papal Rome, there were criteria for immoral behaviour: passion for gambling, adultery with a married woman, friendship with the Cesari brothers. Caravaggio was friends with the Cesari brothers, Bernini in his passions almost killed Constanza – the wife of his assistant, but everyone from peasants to cardinals played cards. This tour is dedicated to passions – in life and in art.

The tour begins in Piazza España, near where relatives of the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini still live, we will look into the nearby church of Sant’Andrea and talk about Bernini’s angels, which were never installed on the Roman bridge. Next we will pass through the Roman laundresses’ quarter and you will learn why it was located very close to the papal palace. We will also see the house where Constance Bonarelli, Bernini’s lover, lived. The itinerary includes visits to three of the most famous Baroque churches, where we will talk about the passionate love of Roman cardinals for decorating chapels. I will tell you who were the best-paid Baroque artists and who lived a miserable existence.

The tour can be supplemented with a visit to one of Rome’s Baroque palaces, as well as a private visit to the Aldobrandini Chapel (The tour must be booked at least a few months in advance).

The tour is led by a guide who is an art historian.
