Excursion to the archipelago of La Maddalena.
The excursion is conducted by car or yacht or public ferry (your choice).
La Maddalena National Park is located in the north-eastern part of Sardinia. The largest island can be reached by ferry from Olbia-Tempio, departing from the port of Palau. There you can rent a boat to explore the rest of the archipelago.
La Maddalena National Park is named after the archipelago that shelters it. It is the only state-owned protected land in all of Italy. The territory itself has been mentioned in history since the 2nd century B.C., and for a long time it was of great value for shipping and was the object of claims by maritime states. This land became a national park only in 1996. The archipelago includes about 60 islands, their coastline stretches for 180 kilometres. In addition, the territory of the park includes a water area of 12,000 hectares.
The latter, however, is being significantly reduced in the coming years.
The national park as a whole is recognised as one of the best places for diving in Europe. The largest island in the archipelago is Isola Maddalena, but it is surpassed in historical importance by Caprera. These two islands
are the only two in La Maddalena to boast motorway links. They are connected to each other by a causeway for
600 metres. Isola Maddalena is visible from afar due to the specific colour of the rocks.
It is worth noting that the beaches of Isola Maddalena are the most popular in the entire national park. These beaches are home to rare wildlife, some of which have been preserved for centuries, while in other parts of the Mediterranean they have long since disappeared.
The island of Santo Stefano beckons those looking for prehistoric settlements, although the area is currently uninhabited.
The tour includes:
Visiting the main islands of the Magdalena Archipelago: Magdalena Island and Caprera.
Visiting the house-museum of the famous Giuseppe Garibaldi – on the island of Caprera stands the House of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who lived here for 26 years. Nearby you can see the memorial chapel and the family cemetery of Garibaldi.
The pine trees that cover the territory of Caprera were planted by the military leader.
