TARROS

Tarros city tour.

Tarros is an ancient Phoenician city located on the island of Sinis in the province of Oristano. The Phoenicians founded Tarros in the 8th century BC. The city, founded by the Phoenicians, was inhabited by the Carthaginians and then the Romans, until in the 11th century Saracen raids forced the inhabitants to move inland. During the Phoenician-Punic Wars, the city was a rich trading centre and inaccessible sea fortress that flourished until the Imperial Roman period.

Today, there is growing evidence of its prehistoric existence and the ruins of the city have been designated an open-air archaeological museum.

Besides the ruins of houses, there are partially preserved shops where red coral and iron were worked, as well as a monumental temple with Doric semi-columns.

Also interesting is the local Tofet, a temple where the bodies of cremated children were kept.

The town has the remains of small and large Thermal Baths.

Tarros has not yet been fully explored, so archaeologists continue to excavate in search of mysterious treasures and new knowledge.

Lovers of seaside holidays will be pleased with the local coastline with crystal clear water.

The ruins of Tarros look unusually picturesque against the sea. You can wander endlessly through the ruins of the ancient city, looking at the remains of the Roman civilisation: the remains of the aqueduct, thermae, temples and theatre.

The sewage gutters in the middle of the street, which once drained the sewage water, catch your eye.

When visiting the island, it is impossible not to pay attention to its history, of which the city of Tarros is a prime example. You will be impressed by the culture and history of this great city.

Comfortable shoes, hats and a bottle of water are recommended when visiting the archaeological area.
