IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE GODFATHER

Excursion: in the footsteps of the film “The Godfather”.

An offer you can’t refuse this phrase, which has become very popular, is the main slogan of this film, recognised as one of the best in the history of cinema. Of course you have guessed what film we are talking about: it is “The Godfather”. It was this masterpiece that gave so much romanticism to such a dangerous criminal phenomenon as the Mafia. And of course, Sicily owes its fame to this trilogy, and to this day this island has a reputation as the birthplace of the Mafia.

In fact, the Mafia was indeed born here, but now has a much greater spread in Mexico, Japan, Albania, China and the United States, Russia, than in Italy. However, many tourists visit Sicily precisely to experience the life of the Mafia, not for nothing these excursions remain one of the most popular in Sicily.

We offer you an unforgettable trip – a visit to the filming locations of the film “The Godfather” in Sicily. The film’s director Francis Ford Coppola took special care in choosing the most beautiful and organic locations on the island to shoot the Sicilian episodes of the film. Although the plot of the film is set in the small town of Corleone, the film was actually shot in the incredibly picturesque mountain town of Savoca. Savoca is a very picturesque mountain town where some of the film’s episodes were shot, concerning young Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) stay in Sicily. There he meets Apollonia and talks to her father, where the young couple is married.

Visit the town of Savoca (II century AD), located on a picturesque mountainside at an altitude of 330 metres above sea level. You’ll walk through the film’s filming locations and see the church of St Nicholas (Michael’s (Al Pacino) wedding to his first wife Apollonia).

A lot of scenes from all three parts were filmed against the backdrop of Castello dello Schiavi (slave castle). The director was literally fascinated by this place and it really does not leave anyone indifferent. Castello degli Schiavi – this marvellous villa of the Sicilian aristocracy is the family nest of the Corleone family. Here young Vito Corleone brings his family, here the car with Apollonia explodes, here Michael dies (even the same chair remains). The place is unique in that the film was shot when the owner was about 28 years old; now he’s in his 70s, and he himself personally shows the villa and talks about it. (Entrance by reservation).

And of course, we’ll try the famous cannoli at the Vitelli Bar, where many of the film’s scenes were shot.

There’s also Forza d’Agro, a colourful village in the mountains with crazy views. It is also the place where several minor episodes of the film were filmed.

Walking through the ancient streets of beautiful towns you can meet the living characters of the legendary film novel and feel the piercing and deep beauty of Sicily in a new, mysterious light.
