The lands of Piero della Francesca.
This tour is conducted by car.
The tour is dedicated to discovering the legacy of the great Renaissance painter, Piero della Francesca, in the province of Arezzo.
Piero della Francesca (circa 1420 – 12 October 1492) was a famous painter of the Early Renaissance period. He studied in Florence and spent his life working within the confines of the Florentine Republic. Very few of the master’s paintings have survived. In addition, he stopped his artistic activity early because of his failing eyesight.
Piero della Francesco can deservedly be considered one of the most original figures of the Early Renaissance – his style was formed under the influence of Florentine painters, and the characters in Piero della Francesca’s paintings have a majestic appearance. His paintings are also characterised by three-dimensional forms, transparent muted colour, perspective structure of space.
Famous paintings by Piero della Francesca: “Portrait of Sigismondo Malatesta”, fresco painting of the Church of St Francis, “Mother of Mercy, with the saints before her”; “Resurrection of Christ”; “Scourging of Christ”; “Altarpiece of Montefeltro”.
The tour begins in the town of Sansepolcro, the artist’s birthplace. Here the house where he lived is still preserved. You will walk the same streets Piero walked and see the city through his eyes. Visit the city museum, where the best of the master’s works are still preserved. One of them is the world-famous fresco “The Resurrection of Christ”, which has become the emblem and symbol of the town.
The next stage of the tour is the neighbouring village of Monterchi (20 minutes by car from Sansepolcro).
This is home to the most enigmatic of the artist’s works, the Madonna del Parto fresco, one of the most interesting and fascinating images of motherhood the world has ever seen.
Further on, you will travel to the town of Arezzo (from Monterchi, 30 minutes by car).
Arezzo is the city where Piero della Francesca also worked. Here his outstanding fresco of Mary Magdalene is preserved in the Cathedral.
And finally, visit the Basilica of St Francis, where a magnificent cycle of frescoes based on the Legend of the Life-Giving Cross has been miraculously preserved in the Baci Chapel. These frescoes are considered a masterpiece of Renaissance painting and the artist’s most important work.
