TORCELLO ISLAND

The island of Toricello is an “abandoned island”

An island where time stands still, inhabited solely by fishermen, disconnected from the world, in huts lost in vegetable gardens and vineyards. If it weren’t for the tourists, there would be a solemn silence.

Often a thriving town of the Venetian Republic, Toricello was once the archbishop’s safe haven. The malaria that dominated the area decimated the city and the people left. Only the monuments around the “Throne of Attila” testify to its former glory. The island is a bit far from the main part of Venice, and it takes almost an hour or more to get there (depending on where you live in Venice).

It’s a curious island, though, and well worth a visit if possible.

It’s about a 5-minute water taxi ride from Burano, so a trip to Torcello can be combined with a trip to Burano.
