The tour starts at the Church of St. Andrew, stop to admire the beautiful, frescoed facade of the Viani-Tallarico house. The Chamber of Commerce (Palazzo Andreani) in the Liberty style will attract admiring glances, as will the fish market designed by G. Romano. Next, take a walk (approximately 10/15 minutes) to the other end of the city, considered the center of the personal life of the rulers of Mantua. Along the way, you will see some houses whose facades are adorned with frescoes and other valuable architectural details. Among them are the charming houses of painters Giulio Romano and Andrea Mantegna, in particular, the circular garden of A. Mantegna’s residence deserves special attention. Nearby is the Church of St. Sebastian, the first testimony of the genius of L. B. Alberti in Mantua; a church whose deep design by the author is not fully understood. A little further is the Palazzo di San Sebastiano, the country residence of Francesco II Gonzaga, husband of Isabella d’Este, which housed Mantegna’s paintings from the cycle ‘The Triumph of Caesar’, now in the collection of the English Queen at Hampton Court. The chosen location for the construction is determined by the nearby island of Te, with the Gonzaga government stables. Currently, the palace houses the museum of the city of Mantua. You cross the street and find yourself in front of the famous Palazzo Te – a magnificent embodiment of mannerism by the Roman painter Giulio Pippi, nicknamed Romano, who moved from Rome to Mantua after the death of his great teacher Raphael, where he lived and worked for 20 years. He ‘exported’ Roman art in its best manifestations to Mantua and Northern Italy. Admire the palace from the outside. The tour ends here. From here, you can return to the starting point of the tour on foot – it will take about 20 minutes, by bus, or by taxi.
