Italy’s best tasting tours

Italy has a wider selection of wines than anywhere else in the world, with up to 2,000 unique grape varieties grown throughout the country. Italy is best known for wines made from local grape varieties. Classic Italian red wines include: Barolo and Barbaresco (both made from the Nebbiolo grape), Chianti and Chianti Classico (made from the Sangiovese grape) Nero d’Avola (Nero d’Avola grape).

Italy is also famous for its sparkling wines: Prosecco (made from Glera grapes), Moscato (from Moscato Bianco grapes).

Among Italian white wines the most famous is Pinot Grigio, which is made from the grape variety of the same name.

Italy also successfully produces wines from international grape varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wines produced in the mountains often have elegant flavors and command a premium price, while wines grown on the plains are easy to drink and comparatively less expensive.

Known around the world for its incredible gastronomy and lust for life, it’s no surprise that Italy is home to more varieties of wine than any other country. Between 300 and 2,000 unique grape varieties are believed to grow in Italian vineyards.

In addition to well-known international varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, Italy prides itself on its local varieties such as Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Montepulciano. While this fantastic amount of variety gives Italian wines a unique flavor that is hard to match, it can be difficult to choose one that is just right for you.
