MONCA

City of Monza. The treasures of Queen Theodolinda.

The city of Monza is not only a Formula 1 circuit.

It is here, in the Duomo Cathedral, in the chapel of the Zavattari brothers, that the Museum of the Iron Crown is located, which houses the Crown of the Ancient Kingdom of Italy, one of the most famous masterpieces of jewellery art of the medieval period. It consists of six fused quadrangular plates decorated with precious stones. Many Holy Roman Emperors, Charles V, Napoleon Bonaparte and others were crowned with this Crown. The Chapel itself is a masterpiece of the XV century. In addition, the museum at the Duomo Cathedral houses the treasures of the Lombard queen Theodolinda: jewellery from the III-VI centuries, relics and jewellery of great value: the golden “Hen and Chickens”, Theodolinda’s golden crown, Stilichon’s ivory diptych, a collection of oil ampullae of pilgrims from the VI century.

Monza boasts the Royal Villa and the largest fenced park in Europe. Here you will be told about the intrigues, love affairs and tragedies of the Savoy royal family.

The city centre is a pedestrian zone. Narrow medieval streets, classicist buildings and libertine elegance, you’ll stroll along the banks of the River Lambro.

Visit the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, the city’s most important architectural monument. It was built in the 6th century next to the palace of the Lombard queen Theodolinda. The height of the bell tower is 78 metres. The frescoes in the cathedral depict the history of the queen in 45 episodes.
