Chiaravalle Abbey

Chiaravalle Abbey. Mysteries of the Templar Order

The Abbey of Chiaravalle is the largest Cistercian abbey in Italy. It is located in the northern part of the country, 5 km from the centre of Milan. The most prominent element of the building is the church tower, which is 56.26 metres high.

The Cistercian Abbey of Milan was founded in 1135 by the founder of the order, Bernard of Clairvaux. The abbey was built as a sign of overcoming the church schism, when two popes were elected at the same time. The building is one of the first examples of Gothic architecture in the whole of Italy.

It was a harmonious complex of buildings, of which only the church has survived to this day. Over the past centuries, it has been rebuilt many times, adding new elements to the architectural ensemble.

The tall tower was added at the beginning of the 14th century. It contains various galleries and the façade is made in contrasting red and white..

The church interior features Bernardino Luini’s famous Madonna of the Good Night.

The building is built in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves divided by cylindrical pilasters. Here the architects used lancet arches for the first time. Only the south side of the monastery, decorated with paintings of the Madonna and Child and the Cistercians, remains from the 13th-century monastery.

This is where the brave Knights Templar stayed.
