You can stop for lunch at a restaurant recommended by your guide.
The security situation in Naples today is a little better than it was 10 years ago.
The scary neighbourhoods with mobsters, crime bosses, shootings and brawls are a thing of the past, but there is still something left.
If you have read previous articles about the criminal side of Naples, you will have realised that it is a very unusual city and even the safest areas can be dangerous in places. There is even a black joke: “If you’ve been to Naples and you haven’t been robbed, you haven’t been to Naples”. Alas, it’s true: many tourists remember the city as dangerous and criminal.
Naples is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. It is home to the Camorra, an organised crime group that controls the entire city. Even the rubbish and waste of Neapolitans is at the mercy of the “camorra”. A few years ago the city was covered with piles of rotting rubbish – there was nowhere to dump their rubbish, as the city’s landfills were overloaded with toxic waste, which the Camorra generously offered to anyone willing to bury in Naples without too much hassle and bureaucratic procedures. Now Naples can breathe freer, though not fully, which is not the case in the periphery of the city, where illegal immigrant barracks and a neighbouring gypsy camp stand between piles of rubbish.
This excursion is for thrill-seekers. You will visit the “third world” – meet “zombies”, see the famous “karcheri” – a special regime prison (outside inspection), walk through the once “dangerous” streets of Naples. If you want, you can even have dinner (although it is safer to have lunch) in the restaurant whose cuisine is so appreciated by the Neapolitan authorities.
