Sirmione Excursion
The excursion can be on foot or combined with a boat trip (boat trip: 30 minutes)
The excursion begins with an introduction to the jewel of Lake Garda, the fairytale spa town of Sirmione, surrounded almost on all sides by the waters of the lake.
Sirmione is a popular resort town, famous not so much for its beaches as for its unique thermal baths and the impressive fortress that hangs over the historic center of the city, giving it a fairytale look.
Sirmione has been famous as a place for a great holiday for a long time – since the times of the Roman Empire. It was then that wealthy residents of Verona tried to buy a villa and a couple of meters of land here, so that they would have somewhere to leave the noisy city.
Sirmione’s main attraction is the Scaliger Castle, built by Lord Mastino of the Scaliger family in the 13th century as a military fortress. It is a real outpost with powerful walls and towers connected by stairs and passages. The highest tower is 47 meters. There is an observation deck on it. Previously, the entrance to the castle was protected by a suspension bridge. Currently, the bridge is permanent. It connects the historical center and new areas. (it is possible to visit the castle).
Sirmione is famous for its thermal springs, in particular the sulphurous waters of Boiola, which are successfully used in the Catullo clinics.
The Grottoes of Cattula are a complex of ancient ruins at the very end of the peninsula, built in the period 30 BC. – 68 A.D. They are one of the largest ancient complexes in Northern Italy, discovered in the 15th century. They were called grottoes because before the excavations they resembled sea caves. In fact, it is an ancient villa, which many people associate with the ancient Roman poet Cattulus, but there is no reliable evidence that he lived here. (Optional visit possible).
