ALGERO

Alghero city tour.

This tour is conducted by car

Alghero is located on the north-west coast of Sardinia and is one of the most beautiful towns on the island. The town has several names – “Spanish Town”, “City of Seaweed” and “Coral Riviera”.

The town’s history dates back to 1102, when the Genoese Doria family built a powerful fortress to defend themselves against the sea power of the Republic of Pisa. But in 1353 the Doria were forced to cede the city to the Aragonese, the Spanish conquerors. The Spaniards expanded the existing fortifications and turned the city into a purely Spanish colony.

They speak mostly Italian. However, locals often switch to the Catalan dialect when talking among themselves. They like to call their town “Barcelonetta” for the Catalan Gothic architecture. Another trace of the Spanish past is the bilingual street signs, as well as the local cuisine, the fact that this is the only place in Sardinia where you can try paella (a typical Catalan dish).

The town has several names – “Spanish Town”, “Seaweed Town” and “Coral Riviera”.

The town is famous for the production of jewellery made from local coral, if you want to visit one of the most famous coral workshops in the town. The city of coral still lives up to this fame to this day. You’ll see the shop windows and small artisan workshops scattered through the narrow streets of the historic centre.

You can dine at any of the pretty restaurants overlooking the city’s harbour, or overlooking the sea and Cape Hunter.
