Visiting the Embassy Residence of the Order of Malta to the Vatican at the Palazzo Orsini:
The Palazzo Orsini, which houses the Embassy, is a unique structure – it sits atop an ancient Roman theatre. The Marcellus Theatre was begun by Julius Caesar and finished by Emperor Octavian. In the Middle Ages there was a fortress, then in the Renaissance there was a palace, which stands to this day. Palazzo Orsini corresponds to the omnipotence of the aristocratic dynasty from which more than one generation of popes came. The Orsini Palace was built just at the time of the oligarchs’ prosperity, in the 13th century. As is usually the case, the palace was never rebuilt. The palace was reconstructed until it took the form of a fortress, which, incidentally, can still be seen today. After Orsini’s death, this powerful structure passed into the “hands” of the diocese, which is their property to this day. At the same time, the palace opened its doors to the public.
A unique collection of icons, jewellery, crosses and much more can be seen here. Among the most valuable items in the palace are 11 rare tapestries from the early 17th century.
