It’s a small town that became a mecca for French landscape painters in the 19th century. It is a small town that became a “mecca” for French landscape painters who organized the “Barbizon School”. Its representatives are Theodore Rousseau, Millet, Aubigny and other artists.
Now they are called forerunners of the Impressionists, the most famous of them – landscape painter Corot, and today captures the viewer with the power of feeling, conveyed by seemingly ordinary landscapes.
The town, or rather village, is very picturesque. Preserved houses and villas of famous artists, an ancient church, cozy and refined streets. There are many good restaurants, stores with souvenirs. Barbizon is located in an ancient oak forest dotted with boulders and rocks left here by the last ice age.
It is no coincidence that not far from Barbizon, in this unusually picturesque forest, is the Franchear Gorge, a gorge where, according to legend, among inhumanly huge rock fragments, evil forces from all over France gathered in the Middle Ages.
A pleasant half-hour walk reveals to the tourist the charm of the French countryside, gentle and well-kept landscapes, cozy lines and enchanting colors.
