Cagliari city tour.
Tour by car
On the southern coast of the island of Sardinia in a picturesque hilly valley lies the city of Cagliari, the administrative centre of the province and the main cultural centre of the autonomous region. The centuries-old history of the city has contributed to the local culture, architecture and traditions, which is the reason for Cagliari’s extraordinary tourist attraction.
Hundreds of historical monuments of unrivalled beauty and originality have found refuge in the fantastic natural surroundings of the southern resort. It is surprising that such a simple and small town can be so rich and multifaceted. In any case, experienced travellers note that Cagliari has a special atmosphere – a soul. And for that matter, the heart of the city can be safely called the Cathedral – so to speak, the zero meridian in counting the sights of Cagliari. The magnificent architectural masterpiece of the Middle Ages is located in the historical centre of the city – Castello district. It is no exaggeration to say that the cathedral is tacitly recognised as the face of the city, the main highlight of the architectural ensemble and a respected religious centre.
Cagliari is the capital and maritime gateway of Sardinia. It is difficult to say who was the founder of this ancient city. It is believed that the Carthaginians were the first to visit the city as early as the 8th century B.C. They founded a primitive settlement, which under the Carthaginians began to resemble a city. But only with the Romans Cagliari turns into a real city with water pipes, paved roads, pavements for pedestrians, town squares, warehouses for salt and grain, amphitheatre, necropolises. The Romans retained the principle of city development adopted by the Carthaginians and did not build on steep slopes. The city developed along the coastline.
