  • The Catacombs are ancient underground labyrinthine necropolises where pagans and early Christians buried their dead.
  • Appian Way – The most important of the ancient public Roman roads. It was built in 312 BC under the censor Appius Claudius Caecus. It was used to connect ancient Rome with Greece, Egypt and Asia Minor.
  • Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore – one of the four main basilicas of the eternal city, that is, the cathedral of the highest rank. It was founded in the early Christian period. In the 5th century, the church was considerably enlarged and rebuilt at the behest of Pope Sixtus III. It was then that the basilica was dedicated to the Mother of God, where the remains of the manger of Jesus Christ are kept.
  • The Church of San Pietro-in-Vincoli is one of the seven great basilicas of Rome. It is also called the Basilica of Eudoxia after the Empress Licinia Eudoxia, who gave the chains of St Peter, with which, according to legend, the Apostle was bound before his execution, to Pope Leo I for safekeeping in the church, and also houses Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses.
  • The Church of San Clemente, a one-of-a-kind “3-layer” church where the relics of St Cyril, Rome’s first Baptistery or baptistery, are buried.
  • Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral of Rome with the cathedra of the Bishop of Rome (as well as the papal throne). It is included in the list of the seven pilgrim basilicas of Rome. One of the four great papal basilicas of Rome.
