Milanese don’t just honour their patron saint, Ambrosius of Mediolanus, they call themselves the “Ambrosian tribe”.
In the city centre you’ll find libraries, art galleries, pharmacies, restaurants and other establishments bearing his name. “Sant’Ambreuse” is how his name sounds in Milanese dialect, or St Ambrose, is one of the four fathers of the Catholic Church.

The Basilica of St Ambrose (Basilica of the Martyrs) is the most beautiful surviving church from the Romanesque period. It was founded by Bishop Ambrosius of Mediola in 379 AD. In the 4th century it received the relics of the first martyrs. There is a triple crystal reliquary with the relics of St Ambrosius and Sts Gervasius and Protasius.
