Cathedral – consecrated in honour of the patron saint of the city, Saint Januarius. It is the seat of the archbishop of the city of Naples. In the cathedral there is a treasury where the relics of the patron saint of the city are kept – the blood and relics of the heavenly patron saint of Campania and Naples, St Januarius. It is believed that terrible calamities await Naples if the blood is not renewed on certain days. The left side aisle leads to the Basilica of Santa Restituta, rebuilt in Baroque style (restorers have preserved the ancient baptistery (4th century) and beautiful mosaics).
The Church of San Gregorio Armeno is the ancient church of St Gregory, the enlightener of Armenia. The monastic ensemble adjacent to the church is a true jewel of the Partenopean Baroque. The church or, as it is often called, the Cathedral of Saint Gregory of Armenia, is located in the historical centre of Naples. In the common people it is known as Santa Patricia, i.e. the Church of St Patricia. It is located on the territory of the monastery and was built in the first half of the 10th century on the ruins of an ancient temple.
The Church of San Pietro ad Aram is said to be the altar on which St Peter preached when he was in Naples, and here he baptised the first Neapolitans to convert to Christianity – St Candide and St Aspreno.
The church and monastery of San Domenico Maggiore, an order of Dominicans, the Chapel of St Thomas Aquinas, here Christ spoke to him during Thomas’ prayer. Thomas Aquinas, author of the Summa Theologica, was closely associated with the Monastery of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples.
Early Christian Catacombs (Catacombs of St Januarius and the underground church, Catacombs of St Gaudioso).
