Corsica Island and Bonifacio.
Tour by car.
While in Italy you have the opportunity to get to France in just 50 minutes, to the island where the famous Napoleon was born. You can visit one of the most ancient fortress towns of Bonifacio, built in the early 9th century by the Italian Count Bonifacio. The harbour is as beautiful as a postcard and the Old Town is a real maze of narrow streets, small squares and medieval houses. You’ll see the Genoese fortifications built in the 16th century, stroll through the cosy and colourful streets of the old centre and visit Europe’s most beautiful Maritime Cemetery.
On the cliffs of Bonifacio, just 14km from the coast of Sardinia, lies an ancient Genoese town known far beyond the borders of Corsica. Founded in the 9th century by a Count from Tuscany on the site of a fishing village, this marvellous castle became a defensive fortress for centuries. Like all of Corsica’s history, the history of the town reflects the struggle of the locals for freedom and their rights. Every piece of the fortress has a remarkable story to tell, from the legendary staircase of the King of Aragon to the relatively “new” garrison of the foreign legion. A short walk through the narrow medieval streets, in the shadow of typical Corsican houses. The local cuisine deserves special attention – it is neither French nor Italian, but a special Corsican cuisine using the best traditions of both countries, with its own peculiar charm. You will not be able to taste such culinary delights in any other place.
The tour includes a visit to the historic centre of Bonifacio:
The Staircase of the King of Aragon is a unique staircase that descends to the sea.
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the oldest buildings in the Romar style.
The Church of John the Baptist is an interesting church with a wooden sculpture that depicts the beheading of John
Genoa Gate – For centuries it served as the only entrance to the upper city.
Plaz d’Armes – The Square of Arms, from which runs the Street of the Two Impartors, where Charles V and Napoleon stayed.
It is possible to organise a boat trip between the island of Sardinia and Corsica, a journey into a world of amazing seascapes and the incredible landscapes of the town of Bonifacio, which can only be seen from the sea. The natural white limestone fjord, the emerald sea and the historic centre of Bonifacio will not leave you indifferent. Your first stop will be the grottoes, where legend has it that the lovers of Bonifacio took refuge. In good weather conditions, when swimming into the grottoes you will only have to raise your head to see a hole that resembles the exact shape of the island of Corsica. You will also have a short visit to the historic centre of Bonifacio and learn about its fascinating history.
