Dresden – Pearl of the Baroque

During our trip, we’ll explore the history of Saxony and Prussia. We’ll learn how the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong became “the Strong,” why contemporaries attributed 365 mistresses to him, why he imprisoned his mistress, Cosel, in a fortress for 49 long years, and much more. In Dresden, we’ll take a stroll through the Old Town—a magnificent architectural complex rightly called Florence on the Elbe: Theaterplatz, Semperoper, the Catholic Court Church, an Italian village, the Zwinger: the Dresden Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Armory, the Crown Gate, the Nymph Fountain, the Porcelain Collection, the Wettin Palace, the Green Vault, the Taschenberg Palace, the Fürstenzug (Rulers of Saxony) panel, the Tournament Court, the New Market Square, the Frauenkirche, the Academy of Arts, the Albertinum, and the Brühl Terrace—the Balcony of Europe.

After lunch, we’ll visit the Dresden Old Masters Picture Gallery, where we’ll admire masterpieces by Italian, Dutch, and Flemish masters. We’ll see the collection’s highlights: Raphael’s Sistine Madonna and Lyotard’s Chocolate Girl.
