Excursion Cortona – La Verna Monastery

Cortona – Monastery of La Verna.

Combined excursion – walking + car.

The Sanctuary of La Verna is located in the commune of the same name and is situated in the National Park of Cazentino. The mountain, covered in majestic forests, is visible from all over Casentino and even from the peaks of Val Tiberina, which are districts in Tuscany.

At the top of the almost pointed mountain, which is 1,283 metres above sea level, is the religious complex of La Verna. This place is famous primarily because it was here that St Francis, in the summer of 1224, received bloody stigmata on his hands and feet. This is where he liked to spend his time and where he often returned. The Franciscan brotherhood founded by the saint is still located here. This place is full of spiritual treasures, steeped in art, culture and history.

You will be able to see:

  • The Church of Santa Maria del Angeli, the first church built here by St Francis and his first followers;
  • Basilica Maggiore – built at the turn of the IV-XVI centuries;
  • Altarpieces by famous Florentine sculptors of majolica.
  • The Stigmata Corridor, where 22 frescoes by Bacio Maria Baci recount scenes from the saint’s life.
  • The cavern that bears the name “bed of St Francis”;
  • The Chapel of the Stigmata, which was built by the Dukes Guidi of Poppy around 1260 on the very spot where St Francis received non-healing bleeding wounds;
  • “Spicco” – a huge stone torn from the rock, stuck in a crevice but not coming down for centuries.
  • For those wishing to delve further into the arts, the La Verna Museum was opened on the grounds of the monastery in 2002.

    Seven rooms offer sacred and cultural materials as well as everyday objects from the Franciscan monastery.

    For those wishing to listen to the church services conducted by the Franciscan brothers every day,
