Excursion to the city of Sorrento

Tour by car

Sorrento is a charming small town located on the peninsula of the same name overlooking the Bay of Naples. Set amongst picturesque cliffs and lemon groves, this idyllic resort with a relaxed atmosphere is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Campania region. Sorrento has beautiful beaches and pretty old streets, is renowned for its excellent cuisine and fine limoncello, and will reward you with beautiful views of Naples, Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

Piazza Tasso is the centre of city life. It is a small square surrounded by pretty streets with many cafes and restaurants. The square is home to the statue of St Antonio and a colourful Baroque church. One of the best things to do in Sorrento is to stroll along the pretty narrow streets that run off the main square in a maze of charm.

Sorrento has two harbours, Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. Interestingly, despite the name Marina Grande is smaller but much more atmospheric and authentic. The harbour buildings surround the church of St Anne, which was built at the end of the 17th century. Marina Piccola is located in the eastern part of Sorrento and is the port from which ferries depart.

The Cathedral of San Filippo and San Giacomo was founded in the 11th century and was originally a Romanesque structure. The bell tower of the cathedral is one of Sorrento’s most striking structures and is located almost 60 metres from the church building itself. It has a Romanesque foundation dating back to the 11th century.

The San Francesco Monastery is one of the oldest places in Sorrento that has survived to this day. It was founded in the 7th century and consists of a monastery building and a church.

Bagni della Regina Giovanna is one of the most beautiful places in Sorrento, located 3.5 km west of the city centre. It is named after the queen of Naples, Giovanna D’Angio, who lived here between 1371 and 1435.

One of the best views in southern Italy is from the small park at Villa Comunale.

The Correale di Terranova Museum, founded in 1924, is considered one of the most interesting provincial museums in Italy.

The Sorrento Archaeological Museum, housed in a neoclassical villa, displays historical artefacts found in various places on the Sorrento peninsula, from Etruscan antiquities to finds dating back to the Roman era.
