Naples:
Cathedral – consecrated in honour of the city’s patron saint, Saint Januarius. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Naples.
The Church of San Gregorio Armeno – the ancient church of St Gregory, the enlightener of Armenia.
The Church of San Pietro ad Aram – it is said to be the altar on which St Peter preached when he was in Naples, and here he baptised the first Neapolitans to convert to Christianity – St Candide and St Aspreno.
The church and monastery of San Domenico Maggiore, an order of Dominicans, the Chapel of St Thomas Aquinas, here Christ spoke to him during Thomas’ prayer. Thomas Aquinas, author of the Summa Theologica, was closely associated with the Monastery of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples.
Early Christian catacombs (Catacombs of St Januarius and the underground church, Catacombs of St Gaudioso). At the foot of the Capodimonte hill in Naples are the famous catacombs of St Gennaro, where the first Neapolitan Christians and church fathers were buried, among whom Gennaro belonged (the catacombs bear his name). The catacombs have preserved ancient altars, necropolis and early Christian frescoes.
Amalfi:
Cathedral – the foundation of the Amalfi Cathedral dates back to the 9th century, and the bronze doors were made in Constantinople in the 11th century. – A gift from the Byzantine emperor. The relics of St Andrew are kept in the crypt of the cathedral and many pilgrims come to worship them.
Ravello:
The small village of Ravello is located in a beautiful and inaccessible place, once settled here by the remote business people of medieval Amalfi. The cathedral in Ravello was founded in 1086. Behind the main altar there is a bowl with the blood of Panteleimon the healer.
