Tour of Pattada and Arbus (from unique handmade knives to Stradivarius violins).
Metal working techniques were first brought to Sardinia by the Arabs. As you and I have already noticed, Sardinia is an island of tradition and craftsmanship. Traditional Sardinian knives are produced all over the island, but it is still worth noting some of the towns where this craft has been transformed into a real art.
Pattada is rightly considered the capital of the island of Sardinia for the production of author’s handmade knives. Depending on the area and the activity, all Sardinian knives have a different blade shape and purpose. There is also a great variety of knives, but they are divided into three main types. The craftsmen from the small town of Pattada in the mountainous part of Sardinia have been honing the art of making this type of knives for generations.
The craft of traditional knives is under the protectorate of the Region of Sardinia and has the DOC mark, which increases their value and recognition.
In the town of Arbus there is a museum of Sardinian knives, opened by one of the masters of this craft Paolo Pusceddu. Here you can visit 4 halls with expositions and pay attention to the tools and products of the masters of different eras. Next to the museum you can see the Guinness Book of World Records knife sculpture, weighing 295 kg and almost 5 metres long.
According to some accounts, during the First World War the Brigatta Sassari, a Sardinian military force that forced the enemy to retreat by masterfully using knives in hand-to-hand combat in the trenches, became very famous.
In 2017, the knives of the famous Fogarizzu craftsman took part in the filming of a Hollywood sci-fi film (The Highest Form), after the filming these pieces were sold at auction. Today, in this very narrow niche, Fogarizzu occupies the most honourable place in the art of premium naifmaking. His works are hunted by many collectors and connoisseurs of author’s art. The cost of his knives starts from 10 thousand euros and goes up to 20 thousand and more. In addition to the impeccable rich finish, outstanding mechanical components with “secrets” known only to the future owner are used. Such specimens will be perfect as a gift for your wealthy friends and connoisseurs of the highest art of author’s nifmaking.
There are dozens of handmade knife workshops in Sardinia. Each has its own history, family clan and generations dedicated to perfecting the craft. You won’t find such a variety of unique products anywhere else.
In addition to seeing handmade knives, you’ll visit a violin maker, where you’ll be able to learn all the steps involved in making violins to Stradivarius’ own standards.
Our tour takes us almost 1,000 metres above sea level, through a mountain range that has hosted the World Rally Championship (WRC) for several years in a row.
