FROM THE CAPITOL TO THE VATICAN

From the Capitol to the Vatican: the walking tour covers over 2 millennia of history.

We’ll start on Capitoline Hill, where the temple of Jupiter Capitoline, Rome’s chief patron saint, was once located.

The temple, built in 509 BC was partially demolished by Michelangelo, and the Forums and neighbouring Palatine Hill were enclosed by buildings. On the tour you will learn why this was done. Next we’ll walk to the Palazzo Venezia, once Mussolini’s residence, but first we’ll stop at the old St Mark’s Church, where an interesting intrigue awaits us – one of the statues in the church is holding an object that could be considered a coded message from the past.

Further on, our route will take us through two ancient temples – the Pantheon and the unsaved temple of the goddess Isis. On the way to the Vatican we will look into the old shopping district, as well as admire Caravaggio in silence (we will see his altarpiece, which not everyone knows about).

The tour will end at the Castle of the Angel, where you will learn what the ancient Roman triumphal road has to do with the Vatican.

The tour is led by a guide who is an art historian.
