It is also possible to stop for lunch at a restaurant recommended by the guide.
Antiquity has given the world a great number of outstanding generals and heroes. More than once they saved their fatherland, crushed enemy armies, destroyed foreign cities. But with all the wealth of choice is difficult to find a more romantic and tragic figure than Spartacus. His terrible name called Mark Antony his rival Octavian, and Cicero – Mark Antony and the people’s tribune Clodius. But with him in the same panegyric, calling Spartacus skilful in military affairs commander, compared the Emperor Trajan Roman historian Fronton.
In the summer of 73 BC, eighty gladiators led by Spartacus escaped from school in Capua and hid at the foot of Vesuvius. It was from there that the famous slave revolt of many thousands rose.
In 71 B.C., before the operation began, a former gladiator slit the throat of his horse to show he was ready to fight to the last man. And so it happened. Plutarch writes that the Thracian warrior rushed at Crassus, killed two of his centurions, and fell, surrounded by his enemies. Most of the rebels died in battle, 6,000 warriors surrendered and were crucified along the Appian Way from Capua to Rome as a terror to the remaining slaves. Spartacus’ body was never found among those crucified or killed in battle.
The gladiators, led by Spartacus and two Celts, Crixus and Oenomaus, came from all corners of the Roman Empire – Thracians, Celts, Germans and Slavs. They had almost no weapons and relied only on their own strength. Soon Spartacus, a skilled military commander, managed to organise a disparate crowd of men and women from different tribes into an army capable of defeating two consular armies and very soon was already preparing recruits for their ranks.
Giovagnoli’s novel Spartacus has been read by almost everyone. Many of us watched the Hollywood film starring Kirk Douglas with bated breath as children. Now there is an opportunity to visit the places described by Giovagnoli, the places where the real events of centuries ago unfolded. We will be able to see the ruins of the amphitheatre and the school of gladiators, the real weapons of gladiators, we will visit the site of the first military camp, broken up by the rebels and many more interesting things related to the famous rebellion of Spartacus in 73 BC
