Lago Maggiore by car, tourist train and motorboat:
You can make a wonderful journey all over Lago Maggiore, stopping in the most beautiful corners of small towns and even visiting Switzerland.
First of all, you will drive to the tourist train stop in Domodossola.
An unforgettable journey on the narrow gauge train “Trenino della Valle Vigezzo” or simply “Vigezzina”, crossing the 52 kilometres separating Italy (Domodossola) and Switzerland (Locarno).
The train leaves from Domodossola, the centre of the Ossolan valleys, then crosses the entire Vigezzo Valley and arrives in Locarno. The train offers views of cliffs, vertiginous bridges, streams of crystal-clear water and small towns, one of which you can get off at for a tour (Santa Maria Maggiore or Re). Santa Maria Maggiore, at 831 metres, is the highest point of the railway line. The small village is home to three very interesting museum structures that honour the history and traditions of the past: the Chimney Sweeper Museum, the House of Spirits and the Pinacoteca of the Rossetti Valentini School of Fine Arts. A village that fascinates with its historic centre, square and streets lined with colourful buildings.
The town of Re is known for the presence of the famous Church of Our Lady of the Blood. The municipality, whose nucleus is gathered around the shrine, also includes the villages of Disimo, Folsogno, Izella, Meis, Olgia and Ponte Buntasca. The surrounding mountains, covered with beech and pine forests, are coloured by the different seasons, creating enchanting landscapes. A small playground at the foot of the sanctuary offers recreational opportunities for the youngest.
The return journey to Stresa will take you from Locarno by boat, crossing Lake Maggiore, admiring the islands of Brissago and the castles of Cannero.
