The history of this place is not rich in legends and details. It is only known that Lerici was first mentioned in 1152. In 1286 Lerici was captured by the Genoese, thanks to which the town was saved from the occupation of Pisa. The main attraction of the town is the old medieval castle, which for a long time was used as a hostel for young people. Part of the castle is open for regular tours. You will probably be interested to visit a small castle located near Lerici, not far from San Terenzo.
While in Lerici, you cannot leave out the famous Maritime Museum. Ancient maps, navigation systems and many other exhibits will fascinate even those who have never been interested in navigation. A sightseeing tour will help you get acquainted with the history of this medieval city, which stands at the crossroads of pilgrimage routes. From the panoramic platforms you will have a beautiful view of the entire Gulf of Poets and the only archipelago in Liguria. Then you will go to the western side of the Gulf of Poets and visit Portovenere. This town was named after the ancient Roman Goddess of Love. Narrow streets, tower houses like no other will help you experience the medieval atmosphere. A visit to St Peter’s Church and St Lawrence Church with the miraculous icon of the White Madonna will complete the tour.
Back in La Spezia you will have the opportunity to walk through the pedestrianised part of the town with plenty of shops.
