Medieval castles in the Marche

Gradara Castle

was built by the Malatesta family in the 12th century and then passed from one famous family to another. Walking through the halls of this castle you can feel the atmosphere in which the most famous historical personalities lived, such as Giovanni Sforza, Lucrezia Borgia, Isotta and Sigismond Malatesta. But the most famous characters are, of course, Paolo and Francesca. Within these walls they loved each other and here they found their death.

Here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Marche hills.

The Castle of San Leo

It is located on a sheer cliff at an altitude of more than 600 metres. It was a military fortress and a prison. The castle has a very austere appearance with massive fortress walls. But it is famous for the fact that one of the most mysterious mystics and adventurers in history – Count Alessandro Cagliostro – spent his last days here.

The Marche region is rich in other castles with their own mysteries and legends. Among them we would like to highlight:

Fortress of Mondavio in the province of Pesaro – Urbino

Castle of Priora in Falconara – Marittima

Castle of Rancia in Tolentino in the province of Macerata

Arquato del Tronto in the province of Ascoli – Piceno
