Milan antique

The tour starts at the Archaeological Museum, whose collection will tell you about the life of ancient Mediolanum – as Milan was once called.

Then you will go to the museum, which is located in the historic part of the city, where traces of antiquity are still preserved today.

During the tour you will see the tower of the ancient Roman circus, a fragment of the ancient city walls with a watchtower known as the Tower of Ansperto, and on Via Brisa, the ruins of the imperial palace complex of the 4th century.

Then follow the ancient streets towards Piazza Carrobbio, where the ancient city gates were located.

You will visit the Basilica of St Ambrose and the adjoining Chapel of St Victor “in the Golden Sky”, which bear witness to early Christian architecture and are famous for their unique Byzantine mosaics.

You’ll visit the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, built at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries AD from the stones of a dismantled Roman amphitheatre. It is famous for its ancient colonnade in the square and for the fact that it still retains its original, very rare in the West, early Christian structure.

Traditionally, you will visit one of the chapels (the Chapel of Sant’Aquillino), richly decorated with early Christian mosaics, was the tomb of the emperors.

In Via de Amicis, in the newly opened archaeological park, you will see the remains of an ancient amphitheatre and a small museum.

All these ancient structures are intricately woven into the structure of the modern city.
