MONASTERY OF SANT MIGUEL DEL FAI

Sant Miguel del Fai Park Reserve is one of the most interesting and unique places in Catalunya, created by nature itself.
The monastery is just an hour’s drive from Barcelona and is Spain’s only Romanesque church, sheltered in a cave with rock walls and vaults. Inside the church, the 15th-century Gothic cleros and the tombstone of Count Guillem Berenguer of Auzon (circa 1000) are of particular note. Its inscription in Latin laments the untimely death of Count Berenguer’s young son Ramon I.

Sant Miguel del Fai has long been a place of worship: in ancient times the Iberian people, delighted by the natural beauty, held pagan rites here. The first information about the church-cave of St. Michael dates back to the year 997, when it was donated by Ramon Borrel to Count Gombau of Besor. Up until 1557, the monastery was home to a community of Benedictine monks. It was then administered by priests who did not take a vow of seclusion. In the 19th century, Sant Miguel del Fai was discovered by Romantic writers who told the world of its beauty, history and legends.

The ringing voice of the Tenes waterfall, which descends from the mountain and is traversed by a mountain pass filled with moisture and freshness, will delight your eyes with the play of its jets and panoramic views of the surrounding area at an altitude of 460 metres above sea level. Behind the hermitage of St Martin, there is hidden access to the oldest and most famous stalactite cave of Faya Toscas, which offers a magnificent view of the valley.
