NATIONAL CAR MUSEUM

Tour of the National Automobile Museum.

The Automobile Museum of Turin combines educational and preservation functions. This did not go unnoticed, and in 2013 the institution was ranked 35th position in the list of the 50 best museums in the world by the English newspaper The Times. A little later, the status of one of the largest museums in Europe was added to the achievement. It all started in 1932 with the idea of two Italians, Cesaro Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia, one of the founders of the Fiat brand. The name of his son Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia is closely connected with the history of the institution – he was engaged in designing and collected the first collection. However, the man did not live to see the grand opening of his brainchild in November 1960. Forty years after the museum opened its doors, the management decided to significantly modernise the building. François Confino was responsible for the design of the exposition areas. The result of their work can still be seen today: the museum has acquired a modern and futuristic look, with interactive areas and unusual installations. A little later, free wireless internet was added, allowing visitors to get all the necessary and interesting information about the exhibits.

The institution boasts an extensive collection of 200 cars of 80 brands from Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Poland, Spain and the USA: from steam engines of the 18th century to high-speed racing cars.

The immersion into the world of vehicles starts from the third floor and the section “The Automobile and the 20th Century”. An area of 3,600 m2 is dedicated to the very first models.

Floor below you will find a smaller collection called “Auto and Man”. There are eight rooms dedicated to this theme.

The Turino Automobile room will appeal to Fiat fans. Fans of this brand know that the town is considered to be its birthplace.

The “Mechanical Symphony” space will help you to see the hidden parts of cars in the form of engines, frames and wheels.

The “Metamorphosis” room will tell you about serial industrial production.

Are you fond of racing and racing cars? The “Formula” room has been created especially for you. The exhibits, including high-speed Fiat, Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Bugatti, are arranged in a track-like area.

The lowest floor is dedicated entirely to design, the creative journey a vehicle takes to sell itself.

The “Open Garage” is the name of the basement of the Turin Automobile Museum, which houses exhibits not shown in exhibitions. Here, 70 iron horses are placed in chronological order on an area of 2,000 m2.

Open all days except 24-25 December, 1 January, 1 May
