Tour of the Molentarjus Regional Natural Park in Cagliari.
This is one of the most valuable nature reserves in Europe. It is a system of wetlands with a total area of about 1600 hectares, forming an ideal habitat for many rare birds and small animals. The uniqueness of the park lies in the presence of both fresh and salt water bodies, separated by narrow strips of land. This makes the ecosystem of Cagliari’s living corner so dynamic and diverse. In addition to its scientific value, Molentargus Park has an unrivalled natural charm.
Molentargus Park is beautiful at different times of the year. In spring, it bursts with bright colours, and by the end of summer, the water in the lakes turns reddish and white salt edges appear along the shores. It is surprising that such a valuable and unique place was included in the category of regional parks relatively recently, in 1999, although the general process of founding the reserve dates back to the 1930s. The fact is that this area serves as a permanent shelter for thousands of migrating birds from all over Europe. In view of this fact, as well as the landscape uniqueness of the park, measures were taken. In the 80’s, public money was allocated to develop the park, and it was not until the late nineties that it became available to the public as a protected park of international importance.
The park is located in the south-eastern part of the city, and to the east it borders on Cagliari’s no less delightful natural attraction, Poetto Beach. By the way, if you drive into the park from the beach side, you can admire the beauty of the surrounding countryside: the track runs along an elevated area and from there you can see the city from the palm of your hand.
The flora of the reserve is dominated by plants adapted to life in marshy conditions: reeds, sedges, dwarf trees and shrubs, as well as numerous aquatic flowering plants.
But the main beauty of the park is still its living inhabitants: cormorants, herons, storks and the magnificent pink flamingos. Bird watching is one of the main attractions for tourists visiting the park. Graceful birds of such unusual colours seem to complete the landscape with their presence. In addition to turtles, hedgehogs, rabbits and, less pleasantly, snakes and lizards can be found in the park.
There are special hiking or cycling trails throughout the park. When visiting the park, it is recommended to follow the established routes, keep quiet and do not disturb the animals.
