Near the town of Pizzo Calabro, just 3 kilometres from the Coast of the Gods within the Serra National Park, the artificial lake Angitola was created in 1966. The lake has a total surface area of 196 hectares and a maximum depth of 28 metres. The entire reserve covers an area of 875 hectares, where a great number of birds find a safe haven. The lake is surrounded by picturesque slopes covered with Mediterranean vegetation, olive groves, eucalyptus, cork oaks, poplars, pines, alder, white willow and other trees. The special microclimate and abundance of food attract a large number of migratory birds, which stop at the lake for rest and nesting.
The fauna of the lake consists not only of birds, but also of mammals: badger, weasel, fox, insectivores such as hedgehogs and small white-toothed hedgehogs, as well as the ubiquitous wild boar. The waters of Lake Andjitola are home to the now rare freshwater crab and many fish such as carp, eel, gambusia, a great eater of mosquito larvae. There are also many species of amphibians and reptiles characteristic of wetlands. There are also pond turtles and water snakes.
The diversity of fauna does not let the most sophisticated naturalists – photo hunters – get bored. Surrounded by wildlife, beautiful natural landscapes, under the guidance of a professional photographer who will share his experience and his expensive equipment with you, you will take unique pictures and enjoy the harmony surrounding you.
