Tour of Pieve in Tuscany (Cresentino).
This tour is conducted by car.
The Gospel comes very early to Arezzo, and as early as the 3rd century AD there was a fairly large Christian community here. By the fourth century Italy had become predominantly Christian. This entailed a great growth of churches and baptisteries. As a rule, they were located outside the city, along important routes of communication. Two important roads leading to Rome and Ravenna passed through Arezzo at that time. For this reason, many early Christian churches were built along them, some of which have survived today with minimal architectural reconstructions.
The term Pieve comes from the Latin “plebs” – people. Pieve appeared during the early Middle Ages, an important category of churches whose main function was to spread Christianity, especially in rural areas.
The nineteenth century was the golden age of the Pieve. The Romanesque church was the centre of everything. It was the point of reference for the religious and social life of all the locals. Births and legal acts were registered in Pieve, and there was often a market near the church. It was also a place of refuge for pilgrims travelling to the holy places. In short, the Pieve is not just a church, but an important church dating back to the beginnings of Christianity.
You can visit 2-3 Pieve in one day, so the number of Pieve and the duration of the tour can be individually selected according to the client’s wishes.
