SAN MARTINO MUSEUM

National Museum of San Martino:

On the hill of Vomero, next to the architectural masterpieces of Naples – Castel Nuovo and Castel Sant’Elmo – is the Carthusian monastery, the Certosa di San Martino, which not only has an extensive collection of artistic treasures, but also a beautiful vantage point overlooking the Bay of Naples.

The construction of the monastery began in 1325 under Charles Duke of Calabria, many years ago, in its cells was the quiet life of the monks, now all the rooms are exhibition halls of the local National Museum with unique exhibits. It was completed in 1368 under Queen Giovanna. The building has typical Neapolitan Baroque features. The single aisle interior of the cathedral impresses with its luxurious marble decoration. Inside the monastery today is the National Museum of San Martino. Its 90 rooms display a huge collection of statuettes and Neapolitan Christmas figurines – presepi, as well as works by famous local artists, as well as things that once belonged to the wealthy inhabitants of the city of Naples and give an idea of the life and habits of the local nobility.

The Cortesian monastery of the Certosa di San Martino is recognised as the jewel in the Italian crown. It has an unusual courtyard with a small garden, beautiful lawns and exquisite fountains, carved stone railings decorated with skulls.

One of the sculptures under the vault is a medieval monk with a skull in his hands. The sculpture is by the famous sculptor and artist Cosimo Fanzago.

These are mostly works by famous local artists, as well as items that once belonged to the wealthy inhabitants of Naples and give a good idea of the life and habits of the local nobility.

This beautiful place is truly worth a visit, as it magically brings peace and tranquillity to the souls of all visitors.

The museum is open every day except Wednesdays, 24 and 25 December, 1 January, 1 May
