SANLURI CASTLE

Tour of the town and castle of Sanluri.

The small town of Sanluri is located in the middle of the Campidano plain, halfway between Cagliari and Oristano. Thanks to its favourable geographical position, Sanluri has always had an important strategic role in military communications, evidence of which can still be seen here today.

Visit the famous Sanluri Castle, a fascinating medieval castle built in honour of Eleonora d’Arborea, was built when the judicature of Cagliari was under the rule of Pisa and was completely rebuilt in the 14th century. The castle is located right in the centre of the town, which was founded by Eleonora of Arborea, ruler of the Giudicate d’Arborea, around 1195.

This castle is one of the best preserved forts in the whole of Sardinia. Castello di Sanluri is also known as the castle of the Counts of Villa Santa, who acquired it and restored it after two world wars: today it is still inhabitable.

There are many legends surrounding the castle, many of which are true. For example, among the interiors of the castle there is a desk that belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte.

We advise you to have a thorough tour of the castle and the internal museums:

Museo del Duca d’Aosta – the museum displays artefacts from the Italian people’s struggle for national independence, freedom and unification of the country, objects from the Second World War, swords and household items of the Bonaparte family, letters of Gabriel D’Annunzio.

Museum of wax models (it contains about 400 works from the 16th to 19th century depicting monuments, historical characters and religious scenes).

Ethnographic Museum of the Capuchin monastic order.

Make sure to walk through the chateau’s rooms, exploring the magnificent rooms, which are furnished with 17th- and 19th-century furniture.

What better way to experience the mysterious corners of the fascinating island of Sardinia than to visit the mysterious corners of the castle, allowing you to immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere and hear fascinating stories of paranormal phenomena in the castle. The picturesque hilly terrain surrounding the castle not only stimulates the imagination, but is also some of the most fertile land, ideal for growing grapes.
