Sforza Castle

Sforza Castle – Castello Sforzesco.

The first castle on this site was built in the 14th century by the Visconti Signori of Milan. In 1450 Francesco Sforza came to power in Milan and rebuilt the already dilapidated castle.

Ludovico Moro (Ludovico Sforza) invited Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci to work on the castle, and they turned it into a prestigious residence.

  • A work by Leonardo’s pupil Francesco Napoletano, “Madonna of Lea” (with views of Castel Sforzesco in the background)
  • Vincenzo Foppa’s “Madonna with Book”
  • Andrea Mantegna’s “Madonna in Glory Surrounded by Saints”
  • Canaletto’s “Views of Venice” and other artists.
  • The Castle also houses the Musical Instruments Museum, the Egyptian Museum, the Archaeological Museum, a collection of antique furniture, a collection of decorative arts, and a collection of prints by Achille Bertarelli.
