The tomb of kings

The Cathedral of St. Denis is older than the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris. In the crypt, in the underground part of the cathedral, are the tombs of French kings.

Here are sarcophagi decorated with sculptural images, in which rested the bodies of deceased French kings. During the Great French Revolution their remains were thrown into the neighboring ditches. However, after the revolution, the bones were collected and, since it was no longer possible to sort out whose bones were where, they were placed in a single “fraternal” royal grave.

Here lie the Carolingians, Capetings, Valois and Bourbons. The burial grounds of St. Denis Cathedral are one of the most sacred sites in French history.
