Trastevere is a medieval quarter of Rome, during this tour – you will be able to visit:

  • Theatre Marcello – an ancient theatre built in 13-11 BC on the Field of Mars.
  • The Forum Boario, the oldest forum, was located on the left bank of the Tiber in a hollow surrounded by the Capitoline, Palatine and Aventine hills.
  • The Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin with the famous mask of the “Mouth of Truth”.
  • The Isle of Tiberina is a small boat-shaped island (270 metres long and 67 metres wide) located in the southern bend of the Tiber River in Rome, south of the Vatican and the oldest Roman bridges
  • San Benedetto-in-Pisinula (if opened), built in the early 12th century on the very spot where St Benedict lived in Rome – considered the smallest church in Rome.
  • Via della Lungaretta is an ancient Roman street that survives to this day, along Trastevere
  • Castello di Angvillare or House of Dante, a tall dark brick tower with a small wall and square prongs at the back of Piazza Belli
  • Church of San Grisogano, where Michelangelo often visited, a titular church consecrated in honour of the Roman martyr Saint Chrysogonus of Aquileia.
  • The Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, built before the legalisation of Christianity – the first dedicated to the Virgin Mary
  • The Window of Fornarina – Raphael’s lover, According to romantic legend, it was in this window that Raphael saw her when he was working in Trastevere on the frescoes of the Villa Agostino Chigi.
  • The Church of San Pietro in Montorio – According to one version, built on the site of the crucifixion of St Peter the Apostle
  • The Little Temple of Bramante, a monument to the defenders of the Republic in 1849, among whom was Goffredo Mameli – author of the Italian anthem “Fratelli d’Italia”
  • Fontane Paola – the largest in Rome
  • Piazzale Garibaldi – the highest observation deck in the city on top of the Janiculum hill, included in the city limits in the 17th century and became the eighth hill of Rome.
  • Garibaldi’s equestrian monument and the cannon that fires at noon, the Romans use it to keep their watches.
