Vevey

Vevey (French: Vevey) is a town in the canton of Vaud, population 17,000.

Vevey is a cosy town on the shores of Lake Geneva, between Montreux and Lausanne, surrounded by the famous Lavaux vineyards. The number of celebrities who have visited or lived in this town is astounding. The most famous fans of Vevey were Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last 25 years of his life here, Ernest Hemingway was a frequent visitor, Hernest Hemingway, the famous English writer Graham Greene worked here, Fedor Dostoevsky wrote several chapters of The Idiot, and Gogol went on to write the poem Dead Souls.From July, on Saturdays, Vevey hosts the Folklore Market, where local winegrowers dressed in national costumes gather and serve freshly made wine to all comers. Vevey is not only a centre of wine production, but also the place where the World Winegrowers’ Festival is held every twenty-five years. In August, Vevey hosts the International Feature Film Festival.

For lovers of architecture and history, Vevey has a lot to offer. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of St Martin and the Russian Orthodox Church of St Barbara (a gift from Count Shuvalov), visit the Museum of Old Vevey in the 15th-century castle, which has one of the best restaurants on the ground floor and the Museum of the Brotherhood of Winemakers and the town’s historical exposition on the upper floors. An interesting collection is assembled in the Museum of Photography. The two thousand exhibits of the Museum of Clocks is one of the most complete private collections in Europe.
