Palazzo Te, the country residence of Federico II Gonzaga, was built for the Marquis’s idle entertainment. It stands on the site of the former family stables, on the islet of Te. The palace is a masterpiece of architecture and painting by the great Giulio Romano, who embodied in Mantua the lessons learned from his teacher Raphael. Built between 1524 and 1533 and made famous while it was still in progress, it surprises and amazes visitors with the variety of its interiors, its unexpected, eccentric and daring mannerist style: the superb and sensual Hall of Cupid and Psyche, the charming and striking Hall of Giants, the beautiful Hall of Horses, the mysterious secret apartments. The palazzo wins numerous visitors with its social and refined atmosphere.
