VISIT TO THE DORIA PAMPHILI PALACE

Visit to the Palazzo Doria Pamphili: a visit to the palace is a must for understanding the Roman Baroque. The Pamphili, along with the more famous Borghese, who were in power in the 17th century, amassed a large collection – Caravaggio, Brueghels, Titian and Raphael. But the real star of the collection is the portrait of Pope Innocent X – by Velázquez.

The main building of Villa Doria Pamphili’s architectural complex is the Casino del Bel Respiro, whose interior houses a unique family collection of worthy works of art, artefacts (including those found on the villa grounds), furniture, and remarkable frescoes by Giovanna Francesco Grimaldi.

The entrance to the park is the monumental Arch of the Four Winds, designed by the Italian architect Andrea Busiri Vici between 1856 and 1859 and partially constructed using material from the Casino of Villa Corsini of the same name, destroyed in 1849 as a result of fighting between French troops and the defenders of the Roman Republic.
