The illusionary deception of the great Bramante in the Church of the Virgin Mary – Bramante was one of the first to use optical illusion in art. Standing before the altar, you would never believe that the depth of the space is only 97 cm. In the original plan, it was supposed to occupy 9 m 70 cm. The visual deception – trompe l’oeil – was successful for Bramante. If you are not aware of the optical illusion effect, it seems that behind the altar there is a large space of the apse with columns and decorations, but in reality, there is none.
The plague epidemic in Western Europe and the Church of Saint Sebastian – in Catholic lands, Saint Sebastian was considered the main protector against the plague – an early Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century. According to legend, Emperor Diocletian ordered him to be shot with arrows.
