Vicenza or “Vichezia” – a city that originated during the Roman Empire. Since 49 BC, there has been a municipality here. Remnants of that era can be seen in the historical center of the city. But above all, the history of the city is connected with Andrea Palladio, an architect whose buildings adorn not only Vicenza and its surroundings but also Padua and Venice. His famous treatise “The Four Books of Architecture” influenced the architectural style of Western Europe from Great Britain to Russia and from America to Australia.
In Vicenza, the great master left future generations the “Palazzo Chiericati”, the “Loggia del Capitaniato”, and many other of his works. The “Teatro Olimpico” – one of his most striking creations, the very first covered theater with a unique stage design that extends deep into the city. The work began in 1580, shortly before the death of Andrea Palladio, continued in 1582-1583 by his son Silla according to the project and design of his father, and was completed by his pupil V. Scamozzi. Palladio’s works and monuments are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list and are a major landmark for contemporary world architecture.
In 2008, the whole world celebrated the 500th anniversary of the great master’s birth.
