Château St. Gerlach: where holiness meets rock and roll

This five-star castle in the valley of the Geul River (Netherlands) began as a hermit's secluded cell in the 12th century, then became a monastery, and in the 18th century was transformed into an elegant château.

Here, history does not gather dust behind glass; it lives in unexpected details. The local church preserves unique 18th-century frescoes that tell the story of the saint.

And in one of the grand halls, an antique mirror with a bullet hole from an American soldier's gun still remains, marking the liberation of the castle during World War II.

The walls of Château St. Gerlach have witnessed much: the pilgrimage of Charles the Bold, official visits from presidents (George W. Bush stayed here), and The Rolling Stones before the Pinkpop festival in 2014.

Today, it is a luxurious hotel in the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection, where you can stroll through a private sculpture park in the morning, explore the monastery frescoes in the afternoon, and sip wine in the same walls where monks once prayed and rock stars relaxed.

An ideal place to touch centuries of history with a glass of champagne in hand.
