Abbey of Chiaravalle. The Mysteries of the Knights Templar
The Abbey of Chiaravalle is the largest Cistercian abbey in Italy. The abbey is located in the northern part of the country, 5 km from the center of Milan. The most noticeable element of the building is the church tower, which is 56.26 meters tall.
The Milan Cistercian abbey was founded in 1135 by the order’s founder, Bernard of Clairvaux. The abbey was built as a sign of overcoming the church schism when two popes were elected simultaneously. The structure is one of the first examples of Gothic architecture in all of Italy.
It was a harmonious complex of buildings, of which only the church has survived to this day. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt many times, adding new elements to the architectural ensemble.
The tall tower was added in the early 14th century. It contains various galleries, and the facade is made in contrasting red and white colors.
In the church interior, you can see the famous work of Bernardino Luini, “Madonna of Good Night.”
The building is constructed in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves, which are separated by cylindrical pilasters. Here, architects first used pointed arches. Only the southern side of the 13th-century monastery remains, decorated with a painting – Madonna with Child and Cistercians.
It was here that brave Knights Templar stopped.
